Primary Attachment Therapy (PAT) is creative, optimistic, loving, simple, nuanced, forgiving, surprising, sometimes paradoxical, and always deeply human. It supports the client’s security in their relationship with self, others, and life in general by using mindful and immediate attachment processes in a safe and loving therapeutic setting. It provides a map to explore implicit learning from our earliest development, reduce/resolve early attachment injuries, and support the pursuit of a satisfying relationship with self, others, and the world in adulthood.
This specific attachment work builds on the principles, tools and techniques of HAKOMI, but uses additional interventions to focus directly on the attachment dynamics in the here and now. It is also heavily influenced by Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB – à la Dan Siegal, Alan Schore, Thomas Lewis, etc.) and Complex Integration of Multiple Brain Systems (CIMBS), developed by Beatrix & Terry Sheldon.
Working with attachment states that are fluid rather than rigid, PAT combines neuroscience with deep limbic attunement. It is unique in that it locates much of the process in the direct relationship between client and therapist, consciously eliciting attachment states and paying particular, caring attention to moment-to-moment dynamics.
We often work in mindfulness with our eyes open, focusing on attachment needs and indicators that arise in the present moment – in the “room,” within the client, and between client and therapist – and limiting exploration of historical, future, or outside-the-current-context material. Rather than regressing, we engage the adult client in the experience of the present moment within our connection. This supports brain restructuring and the development of new neural pathways.
In addition to introducing specific clinical options for working with attachment processes, this training provides a supportive context for refining the therapist’s attachment responses and deepening the ability for professional intimacy.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
You will learn:
1. Recognize your attachment-related reactions as a therapist and training participant.
2. Understand basic aspects of developmental theory and adult attachment theory.
3. understand the professional intimacy and ethics of the PAT.
4. to create a safe, limbic environment in the here and now.
5. Apply, induce and support mindfulness with open (and closed) eyes to yourself and the client and work in the present moment.
6. Promote safety in the therapeutic relationship by naming and exploring differences in power, ethnicity, culture, language, age, socioeconomic status, gender and/or sexual orientation between you and your clients.
7. to consciously address the client’s habitual attachment patterns and possible attachment injuries with the therapist and to explore them together.
8. work with central binding material.
9. Assess attachment security and insecurity and support and integrate security.
